Courthouse arsonist faces new charges

Ted Spiegel, paroled in October 2002 for starting a fire that destroyed part of the Franklin County Court House, was arrested today on charges of third-degree burglary, possession of marijuana and possession of burglary tools.

A caller to Frankfort Police about 12:43 a.m. today reported an alarm had been set off at East Side Family Medicine on Versailles Road. Upon arrival, officers noticed a back window had been broken and someone was inside the building, according to a police report.

Officers searched the business, and discovered Spiegel hiding in a false wall he had accessed through the ceiling, the report said. When Speigel was searched, marijuana was discovered in his shoe and a burglary tool was lying on a nearby desk, the report said.

Spiegel previously served eight years of a 23-year sentence after pleading guilty to starting the 1994 fire at the courthouse before being released on parole Oct. 28, 2002.

Spiegel, now 28, was accused of starting the fire in an attempt to hide his criminal records. The fire destroyed written records of DUI offenses in Franklin District Court as well as other documents. Spiegel was also charged with setting fire to the Franklin County High School Field House in August 1994.
