VERSAILLES – With 5:43 left in the third quarter, Woodford County’s boys basketball team had just lost guard Sheafan Mattingly and fallen behind by 14 points.
Things seemed to be going Franklin County’s way, but it was the Yellowjackets who won the 41st District tournament game Wednesday, beating FCHS 75-70 at Woodford County High.
“We didn’t respond and they did,” FCHS coach Lewis Morris said. “That’s the bottom line.”
The Jackets (10-13) play Frankfort High Friday night for the district championship with both teams advancing to next week’s regional tournament.
The Flyers (14-12) played a superb first half, especially the second quarter when they held Woodford to just seven points. After leading 19-16 after the first quarter, Franklin County was ahead 39-23 at halftime.
“Franklin County came out and played really well,” Woodford coach Bill Bland said. “They shot well, and we weren’t able to get in sync the first half. We were only getting one shot, and we were a little impatient.”
