Library says patrons safe from hacker

Published 12:00 am Sunday, April 6, 2003

The 12,000 or so members of the Paul Sawyier Library can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that their personal information wasn’t accessed by a computer hacker last Sunday.

Robert McCoy, computer system administrator for the library on Wapping Street, said he is certain the patron database wasn’t compromised.

“The patron database, which includes library members information such as names, addresses and Social Security numbers, was on another server entirely,” McCoy explained. “It’s not a Web-enabled server.”

McCoy first told Frankfort Police someone hacked into the library’s computer network system at 3:36 a.m. Sunday, March 30, and might have gained access to confidential employee and patron records.

However, McCoy said a further investigation revealed that the hacker was only able to access a server that contained information on the library’s 30 employees among other things.
