Course charted for KSU

Now that Kentucky State University’s governing board has a definitive blueprint for the school’s future, it is faced with tough decisions and a call for action.
Those were largely the sentiments of KSU officials and members of the Council on Postsecondary Education Friday as they gave approval to a comprehensive assessment of the school’s programs and expenditures.
Stabilizing leadership and developing a clearer mission are chief among the guidelines set forth in a report released by Baker and Hostetler, a Cleveland-based law firm. The academic review was commissioned by CPE and KSU last fall at a time when the school was searching for its fifth president in a decade.
The report makes clear the university has suffered from a revolving door administration, needs more academic support for programs like education and aquaculture and doesn’t spend money wisely. At the same time, consultants noted, the school is likely under-funded but comparisons to benchmark institutions with “disproportionately” higher enrollments can be misleading.
