Franklin County’s softball team took on two top 15 teams Saturday and came out on the losing end both times – but just barely.
The Lady Flyers lost to Eastern 2-1 in eight innings and Grayson County 3-1 in 10 innings at Sally Gaines Field. Both games went to the international tiebreak to decide a winner.
In an international tiebreak, both teams start their last at-bats with a runner on second base and then have three outs to try and score.
“Grayson County is 10th in the state, and Eastern is 14th,” FCHS coach Tracy Spickard said. “Those were two great games, and both we really should have won, especially the last one (against Grayson).
“Those were two really good teams with good pitching,” she added, “but we have great pitching, too.” Amy Eichhorn, who pitched for FCHS, recorded the 1,000th strikeout of her high school career against Grayson County.
FCHS scored the first run in the Grayson County game. In the third inning Sarah Boden led off with an infield single, went to second on a groundout to the pitcher by Amy Moore, and scored on a base hit by Eichhorn.
The Lady Cougars came right back and tied the game in the top of the fourth. Michelle Critchelow drew a one-out walk and attempted to steal second. The throw to second went into centerfield, allowing Critchelow to come around with the tying run.
