Western Hills loses to EJHS

Senior Night didn’t go the way Western Hills’ baseball team had hoped, but the Wolverines don’t have time to dwell on that.

WHHS, which lost to East Jessamine 12-1 Friday on Senior Night, plays Woodford County Monday in the 41st District tournament at Capitol View Park.

“I don’t think we’ll let this affect us in any way for Monday’s game,” WHHS coach Craig Fry said. “The kids understand we didn’t have the season we wanted to have, but all that can change in a hurry.”

Fry started all seven seniors – Joey Wainscott, Kris Trautwein, Brandon Gaines, Adam Barker, Derrick Young, Rich Buckler and Kyle Breckel.

Wainscott led off the first inning by getting hit by a pitch but left the game after that because of a problem with his back.

“Joey’s a leader on this team,” Fry said, “and when he came out early it deflated us a little bit. We were hoping for a little better performance, but these things happen. We hit the ball a little bit late in the game, and that’s good.”

East Jessamine took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, led by Brandon Bottom’s two-run homer, and the Jaguars added a run in the second when Joe Bussell drew a walk, went to second and third on a wild pitch, and scored on a fly ball by Joe Cartwright.

WHHS threatened in the second inning as Shan Dutta and Steve Kull hit back-to-back singles with one out. Both runners stole a base, putting them at second and third, but a strikeout and a popup to first base ended the inning.
