From last to first

A year ago Franklin County, seeded last, went on to win the tournament, and Frankfort High followed suit this year.

The Panthers, fresh off a 6-0 upset of the top-seeded Flyers Monday, went on the win the tournament with a 6-3 victory over Woodford County Thursday night in the championship game at Capitol View Park.

Frankfort improves to 14-17 overall, while the Yellowjackets drop to 20-14.

It’s the first district crown for the Panthers in 14 years.

“Being the bottom seed, and winning this was really sweet,” said tournament MVP Cam Howell. “Franklin County had beaten us too many times in the opening round for us to back down, and after we beat them, we weren’t satisfied. We didn’t want to settle for second place.

“We got our chances and we took it.”

The Panthers beat Woodford County the same way they beat the Flyers on Monday, with great pitching and error-free defense.

Senior Chris Amburgey went the distance for Frankfort, scattering six hits and walking three. He struck out seven.

“The difference in the game was we walked eight and Amburgey walked three,” Woodford County coach Jay Lucas said. “Defensively, we had four errors and Frankfort had none. Frankfort High deserved to win.”
