City utility trims plans; growth slow

The Frankfort Electric and Water Plant Board on Tuesday began an overview of a leaner operating budget for next year that significantly scales back the utility’s electric and water departments.

Prompted by last year’s slow growth, plant board officials said budget projections weren’t high enough to continue some of the departments’ planned construction projects.

The departments grew by 2 percent last year, according to David Sandidge, assistant general manager at the plant board. That figure wasn’t enough to keep up with the inflation rate of 3 percent.

“That’s the first time that’s happened since I’ve been here,” said Sandidge, who said he’s worked for the plant board for about 15 years.

The plant board’s total budget for next year will be about $48 million. Last year’s budget was $55.9 million.
