A 55-year-old man has been convicted by a Franklin County Circuit Court jury for raping, sodomizing and sexually abusing a girl over a two-year period starting when she was 11.
The jury recommended an 80-year sentence for Steven Thomas Richardson after a trial that ended Wednesday. Sentencing by Franklin County Circuit Judge Roger Crittenden is scheduled at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 1.
Franklin County Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Dana Todd said she was pleased with the jury’s recommendation.
“He (Richardson) acted as if it were a misunderstanding,” Todd said, “and that’s another way of blaming the victim. I’m so proud of this jury for seeing through that.”
During the two-year span this was going on, the girl, who is slightly mentally handicapped, thought Richardson was her boyfriend, Todd said.
“She very innocently shared a secret with a social worker that she had a boyfriend,” Todd said. “Once someone figured out her boyfriend was more than 40 years her senior, a red flag came up and an investigation began.”
Richardson, who’d been employed as a janitor with the Kentucky State Police, was a friend of the girl’s family, Todd said, and the family sometimes allowed her to spend weekends with him.
