The Frankfort 13-year-old all-stars appeared to pull out a win in the opening round of the district baseball tournament, only to see the team’s potential victory turn into a defeat.
Oldham County scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to get a 10-9 win and move on in the tournament, held at Franklin County High School.
Frankfort drops to the losers bracket and will play Friday night at 8 against the loser of the Shelby County-NCKBA South game while Oldham County will play tonight at 6 against NCKBA North.
The Shelby County-NCKBA South game will take place tonight around 8. In Wednesday night’s second game, NCKBA South defeated Spencer County 13-3 in six innings.
Leading 9-8 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Frankfort got the first two Oldham batters out. Oldham’s Zach Fye then hit a hard single to right field. Frankfort right fielder Brandon May scooped up the ball and fired a throw to first.
The umpire called Fye out but quickly changed his mind on the close play, ruling him safe. Instead of the game being over at that point, play continued with Fye stealing second base and Mike Davis followed with a ball hit near the left field line.
Left fielder Jay Van dove for the ball but he couldn’t quite make the catch. The ball was ruled fair, allowing Fye to score and tie the game.
Now with Davis on second, a wild pitch allowed him to go to third, and he scored the winning run on a bloop single by Chris Willis.
