Capital City Airport marks 50 years since inception

Betty Jane Carter grew up a stone’s throw from Frankfort’s old airport near Silver Lake on Georgetown Road.

“I remember when we lived there, we would go over on Sunday sometimes,” she said.

So it could have been fate that Carter – now B.J. Arnsparger of San Diego – was named Miss Capital City Airport during the dedication of the “new” airport on Louisville Road in 1955.

“For Frankfort to have a new airport was a pretty good deal,” said Arnsparger.

That “big deal” will be recognized again during the sixth annual Aviation Day Saturday at the airport.

Roger Green, director of air transport, said the day will recognize the 50th anniversary of the airport’s beginnings. (Work on the airport began in 1953.)
