Franklin Co. extends Hilen lead

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, September 2, 2003

For the second round of the Hilen Cup, Franklin County’s boys golf team built a 35-stroke lead while honoring teams of the past.

On “throwback day” Tuesday at Juniper Hill, the Flyers wore team shirts from the past seven years, all seasons in which they’ve won the Hilen Cup.

“It was the seniors’ idea,” FCHS senior Johnny Wilson said. “Every year we do something different. Last year it was dress however you want. This year everyone’s wearing a shirt from a different year. Everyone wore a shirt they liked, and everyone has a different one on.”

The Flyers didn’t shoot quite as well Tuesday as they did in Monday’s first round of the Hilen Cup, finishing at 147 after Monday’s 141. Western Hills shot 164 Tuesday, and Frankfort High, 168.

Tuesday’s round was played on the back nine at Juniper, and today’s final round will be played on the front nine. Each team gets to drop its highest round for its final score, as do individuals who are playing for the Geno Benassi Memorial Award.

“The last two years at the Flyer Classic we’ve been even and two-under on the back,” FCHS coach James Myers said, “and those are a lot tougher tournament conditions when you play all 18 holes in the same day.
