Flood may sap county surplus

Franklin Fiscal Court, in a special meeting Thursday, discussed using county surplus funds to help recover from the devastating flash flood that hit the Bald Knob area Aug. 22.

Overall, flood damage on roads and bridges is estimated to be $900,000. Two bridges will have to be replaced – one on Stony Creek Road and the other on North Stony Creek Road – at an estimated cost of $250,000.

The bridge replacements can be done this fall, said Randy Thompson, superintendent of the county road department.

Magistrates discussed spending $30,000 to install two low-water crossings on Stony Creek and North Stony Creek roads. But the bridges will still have to be replaced.

When asked for his recommendation, Thompson suggested waiting until the next regular Fiscal Court meeting on Sept. 18 to decide whether to authorize the use of surplus funds.
