Campaign slated to restock Emergency Food Pantry

There’s an emergency here in Frankfort, and you can help … if you will.

The shelves at the Franklin County Emergency Food Pantry are virtually empty, prompting a special drive which will be conducted Friday and Saturday.

“We’ll start at 4 o’clock Friday afternoon,” said Brenda Rice, vice president of the Frankfort Kiwanis Club which is coordinating the effort, “and then begin again at 10 o’clock Saturday morning.”

Pickup sites are both Kroger locations, Sav-a-Lot and Pic-Pac. Volunteers will be on hand to offer shoppers lists of suggested food items for purchase and collect them as they leave the store.

“The need is absolutely critical,” said Garnett Hulette, a longtime member of the Food Panty board and the Kiwanis club. “There’s nothing on the shelves … there are fewer donations and greater demand. Things are just totally out of balance.”

Normally the Kiwanians conduct a major food drive in early November, but the need is so critical they felt this effort was absolutely necessary now. That drive will be held Nov. 7-8 this year.
