Western Hills’ boys golf team has been shooting better than it did Wednesday at Juniper Hill, but the Wolverines’ 153 was good enough to win a tri-match against Frankfort High and Scott County.
The win moves WHHS to 9-4 on the season.
“The seniors have kind of picked it up,” WHHS coach Jeff Bibb said. “We’ve been having four scores in the 30s every time. Kyle (Bibb) has been playing real consistent. His highest score has been 39 in our last seven matches until today.”
WHHS freshman Sean Rodgers was medalist with a two-over-par 37 Wednesday, followed by Michael Burton and Eric Kinsolving at 39, Chase Pratt with a 40, Tyler Hicks at 43, and Bibb with a 44.
“Sean’s been in kind of a slump,” Coach Bibb said, “but he came out of it today to lead us, and that’s what we’re looking for. If one player has a bad day the other four can pick him up.
“Eric Kinsolving has shot 39 the last two days,” he added, “and Michael Burton has been shooting in the 30s consistently. Chase has been in a slump, but he came back.”
Western Hills has lost to Lexington Catholic, to Woodford County twice, and at Scott County, but the Wolverines have also beaten Scott and Lexington Catholic at Juniper.
“I attribute it to our guys didn’t play a lot of golf this summer,” Coach Bibb said. “They worked or played other sports, and now we’re peaking at the right time.”
Scott County was second with a 173, and Frankfort finished at 189. The Panthers were led Wednesday by Taylor Hicks and Seth Dawson, who both shot 45. Jordan Montgomery finished at 47, followed by Ben Lassiter and Eric Estill, 52, and Adam Waldner, 53.
