FCHS eases by Taylor Co.

The Franklin County High School girls soccer team had more to play for than just a win Wednesday night against Taylor County.

Because the Lady Flyers have struggled offensively, coach Charley Carlson promised his team that if they scored a goal against the Lady Cardinals he would show up for practice wearing a dress.

The Flyers (5-12-1) seemed to take that deal to heart because when FCHS needed a goal the most it got its coveted score with 18 minutes left in the second half to beat Taylor County 1-0 at Sower Soccer Field.

Having lost five of its last seven games, FCHS could muster only one goal in those defeats. And with a plethora of missed shots and errant passes in the first half it seemed like the drought was to continue against the Lady Cardinals.

But in the second half the Flyers took charge from the opening kickoff and controlled the tempo of the game. FCHS was able to outshoot the Cardinals 8 to 2 the final 40 minutes of play.

However, Franklin County was finally able to take the lead and gain momentum on a goal by sophomore Sarah Baldwin with 18 minutes remaining.

“I thought that it took us awhile to get going, but once we got a goal the game changed for us because we were able to settle down,” Carlson said.
