The Good Life: Current enjoying college basketball

LOUISVILLE – It’s all good.
Frankfort High graduate Chris Current is working hard, studying hard and enjoying being part of the University of Louisville men’s basketball team.
“It’s real good,” Current said during the Cardinals’ media day Thursday. “It’s some work, but I like it.”
That work includes individual instruction sessions, and Current – who was named first team all-state by the Lexington Herald-Leader and second team all-state by The Courier-Journal and the Associated Press last season – sees some improvements in his game.
“You have to get better,” he said. “I feel good about the way I’m progressing. Just playing, I’m learning so many other things. You have people who can see things you’re doing. Players will notice something and tell you what you need to do and what can help you in certain situations.”
The instruction sessions are with three other players and are “forty-five minutes of non-stop shooting,” Current said. “You practice defense, work on shooting, get a lot of shots up, and running.”
Current, a non-scholarship player at U of L, has gotten stronger. He now weighs 186, a gain of eight pounds, and the coaching staff would like for him to be at 195 pounds by the end of next year.
“Everything I’ve been doing I’ve gone up 35 to 40 percent,” he said. “That’s a big increase, but it’s a lot easier when the other players are stronger. You push yourself more.”
That’s what Current will have to do to take his game to the next level.
