State bound – Flyers, three FCHS girls advance

Published 12:00 am Monday, November 3, 2003

LOUISVILLE – The Franklin County girls cross country team battled illnesses as well as several of the state’s top runners Saturday in the Class AA, Region 3 cross country meet.

The boys team, meanwhile, overcame a rough start at McNeely Lake Park, and in the process, was the only local team to qualify for next week’s state meet at the Kentucky Horse Park.

The Flyers finished third in the team standings with the top four teams qualifying for state. South Oldham won the boys title, just ahead of North Oldham. DeSales took fourth. Western Hills finished eighth.

“I’m proud of our boys,” FCHS coach Kelly McDaniel said. “They ran well but still not as well as they could have.”

Franklin County’s Jordan Criswell fell at the start of the race and teammate Jamie Sturm stopped to help him up. The officials decided to restart the race at that point.

“It was a mental race after that,” McDaniel said.

South Oldham’s Daniel Murner was medalist with a time of 17:03.75. Justin Kuhn turned in the top race for the Flyers, finishing 14th. Andrew Howe was 17th, Sturm 21st and Levi Blackburn was 25th.

“Jamie ran a great race,” McDaniel said. “Dustin (Hughes) dropped off a bit and I yelled to Jamie that we were counting on him at that point and he just took off.”
