Redistricting proposed for three county schools

A plan to redistrict elementary school students on the west side of Franklin County was proposed Monday in anticipation of the opening of Westridge Elementary School.
The change for students attending Collins Lane and Bridgeport elementaries, as well as those students attending Bald Knob Elementary, would take effect in the 2004-05 school year when Westridge replaces Bald Knob.
Superintendent Monte Chance presented the Franklin County Board of Education maps of the proposed redistricting. The three schools require redistricting because of the opening of Westridge in 2004.
Chance said four factors were considered when determining the redistricting of the schools: estimated enrollments, limitations of the facilities, anticipated five-year growth and traffic patterns.
“Westridge Elementary will be the area north of U.S. 60, west of the Kentucky River and west of the Frankfort Independent district,” he said. “We picked up some area from Bridgeport and Collins Lane.”
Currently, Collins Lane has 540 students making the school overcrowded; the building was only built for 445 students, Chance said.
“Some classes are in areas not originally intended for instruction,” he said. “I am not expecting a whole lot of growth in this area unless sewers are developed along the U.S. 127 corridor.”
Bridgeport gained territory that was close to the new school from the Collins Lane district.
“In some areas students would be within walking distance of the school,” Chance said. “We anticipate 75 to 100 additional housing units to be built on Cardwell Lane by the fall of 2005, so we have to allow for that room. If we limit it to 415 students then we can allow for these other students since the building was designed for 500 students.”
Chance said he will have public meetings at the three public schools to discuss the redistricting as well as other information on the following dates: Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. and Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. Also, Chance is presenting the information on Cable 10 today and the information can be accessed on the Internet under current news at www.franklin.k12.ky.us.
