Sewer fee to be due in March

A new fee of $4 per month won’t show up on residents’ sewer bills until at least February 2004 with the first payment due by March.
Members of the city’s Sewer Task Force Committee voted Thursday night to push the implementation date back one month to allow more time for public education about the new fee.
Because city commissioners tabled a first reading of the proposed ordinance at their Nov. 7 meeting, the earliest implementation would have to follow a first reading by the commission in December and a second reading in January.
Sewer Director Bill Scalf had said at an earlier commission work session that when the new fees are assessed, his department would not be ready to make all the repairs to lateral sewer lines that are currently needed. The $4 fee is to cover city maintenance of lateral lines, which currently are a property owner’s responsibility.
Scalf said it wasn’t possible for him to come up with a good estimate of how many repairs the city will need to make to lateral lines.
