Hubbard enjoying his second time around

It’s hard to think of Gary Hubbard as being a new coach at Western Hills.

“I’ve been coaching here since they opened the doors,” said Hubbard, who’s coached football, baseball and basketball at the school. He served as the boys head basketball coach for nine years before resigning in 1998.

Now, after a five-year absence, Hubbard is back at WHHS as the interim boys basketball coach.

Alan Spade was the Wolverine boys basketball coach the past five seasons, but he left WHHS in August for a teaching position and the athletic director’s job at Frankfort High.

Hubbard was hired as the boys basketball coach at Western Hills for this season on an interim basis.

“It was a big honor to be asked back by the students, faculty, administration, everybody,” Hubbard said. “At first I didn’t know about doing it. I’m self-employed, and the men who work for me have been working extra time. They know this is something I like to do, that’s fun to do.”

Hubbard has two businesses – Coach Homes and Cabinet Concepts of Frankfort – where he still works.

His daughter, Lindsay, is a sophomore and a cheerleader at WHHS, and that brought him back to basketball games.
