Local unemployment rate rises

Unemployment in Franklin County rose slightly in December, but the rate compared to a year ago is down more than 1 percent, according to state figures released Thursday.
Franklin County reported a 6.1 percent unemployment rate in December, up from a rate of 6 percent in November but down from 7.2 percent in December 2011, statistics from the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet show.
In all, 97 counties reported lower December unemployment rates compared to last year, according to the cabinet. Unemployment rates rose in 21 counties, while two stayed flat during the same span.
Unemployment statewide rose from 7.6 percent in November to 7.9 percent in December. The rate is 0.7 percent lower compared to December 2011.
Franklin County had one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state in December, trailing only Woodford Countys 5.4 percent and Fayette and Union counties 5.9 percent.
