Shelby County tops FHS at the buzzer

Just when it looked as if Frankfort Highs boys basketball team had forced overtime, Shelby County ended the Panthers night early.

The Rockets (9-15) won 52-50 Tuesday night at F.D. Wilkinson Gymnasium when Michael Barry hit a layup at the buzzer.

Weve lost a couple of games right at the buzzer, Shelby County coach Jason Couch said. We were due one of these.

It was Shelby that controlled the game early, leading 17-10 after the first quarter and 24-20 at halftime.

The Rockets extended their lead to 28-22 early in the third quarter, but Frankfort reeled off 12 straight points to go ahead 34-28 with 2:18 left in the period.

At the end of the quarter the Panthers led 37-32.

Frankforts first three baskets of the fourth quarter were 3-pointers from Jalen Oliver, and with 4:35 left in the game FHS was ahead 46-39.

When we were down we had to take some chances, Couch said, so we went with our half-court trap. Sometimes that leaves people open in the corner.

We were hoping we could turn them over and get a quick shot before he (Oliver) could get to the corner.

That didnt happen early in the fourth quarter, but it did in the last four minutes as Shelby outscored FHS 13-4.

We had too many unforced turnovers, FHS coach Matthew Yates said. I thought we played hard and tried to do what we practiced on.

We missed too many layups that came back to haunt us at the end. We turned them over time after time, but we couldnt capitalize on them. Turnovers are no good if you cant score off of them.

The Panthers (7-15) were leading 48-42 with 3:54 left in the game, but the Rockets went on an 8-0 run to go ahead 50-48 with 1:43 remaining.

Frankforts Teantre McGee tied the game with a layup with 12 seconds left, but the Rockets raced downcourt and Barrys shot at the buzzer gave Shelby County the win.

They went to a 1-2-2 half-court trap, Yates said about the fourth quarter. Weve seen it before, and weve run it ourselves. We did OK early on, but we missed a couple of shots in close.

Then there was a two-minute stretch where we turned it over two or three times against it.

Oliver led all players with 21 points and was the only Panther in double figures.

Kipp Moore led Shelby with 14 points, and Jacob Gowin had 13.

Frankfort plays its next game Saturday at Oldham County.
