Local graduates, KSU run well at UK Invitational

LEXINGTON — Kentucky State University, Bellarmine and host Kentucky were among the 23 indoor track and field teams that competed at the Kentucky Track & Field Invitational last weekend at the Nutter Field House.
KSU junior Kieren Broussard became an NCAA DII provisional qualifier in the 800-meter run after his performance at the Kentucky Invitational.
Broussard finished in fifth place overall with a time of 1:53.87 and was the top finisher from an NCAA DII school. The time was converted to 1:55:50 based on the track size at the Nutter Field House.
A runner must finish with a time under 1:55:63 to provisionally qualify for NCAA DII Nationals. Broussard is currently ranked 10th in the country after his finish last weekend.
Western Hills graduate Alisha Adair, a freshman at UK, ran on the winning 4×400 relay team with Sha’Keela Saunders, Morganne Phillips and Kendra Harrison. Their winning time was 3:47.68.
Adair finished ninth in the preliminaries of 60-meter dash with a time of 7.63 seconds. The top eight advanced to the final for the event.
In the 200-meter dash Adair was 10th in 24.68 seconds.
Bellarmine senior Robert Sandlin, a graduate of Franklin County, placed fourth in the mile run with a time of 4:09.99.
The 23 teams that participated at the Kentucky Invitational were Ohio State (women’s team only), Central Florida, Wake Forest, Eastern Kentucky, Western Kentucky, Arkansas State, Chicago State, Dayton (women’s team only), Jackson State, Kentucky State, Marshall (women’s team only), Northern Kentucky, Shorter, Southern Indiana, Southern Illinois, Troy, Xavier, Bellarmine, Florida A&M, Miami (Ohio), IUPUI and Kentucky.
The KSU teams are taking a week off before heading to Findlay, Ohio for the Findlay Open Jan. 31.

Distance medley relay — 10. KSU (Kieren Broussard, Carlos Smith, Jalen Glenn, Austin Dillow) 10:57.16.
800-meter run — 33. Denita Brown 2:30.06.
Long jump — 30. Kenya Johnson 4.72 meters.
Triple jump — 24. Kenya Johnson 9.91 meters.
Shot put — 31. Tia Jones 11.42 meters, 35. Joscilyn Crain (PR) 10.70 meters.
