Charles ‘Tanner’ Duke

LEXINGTON —Charles “Tanner” Duke, 15, son of Fred Pierson and Millie Powell Duke, passed away, Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014.

An excellent student, Tanner was in the gifted and talented program at Meadowthorpe Elementary and Winburn Middle, and he was currently a sophomore in the Liberal Arts Academy at Henry Clay High School. At Henry Clay, he was a member of the cross-country team, track team, Young Life Organization, Y-Club and Beta Club. Tanner was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church, its youth group and a volunteer for vacation Bible school. He was a Champions and Babe Ruth baseball pitcher and player. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping, golfing and gardening with his family and friends. He also had a love for Quarter Horses and was a former equine barrel racer. He was a kind-hearted, loving and influential leader in academics, clubs, sports teams and Young Life.He had a great sense of humor, and he was playful, affectionate and outgoing. Recently, he accepted Christ into his life and influenced many of his peers with his strong Christian faith.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sister, Mason Blair Duke; maternal grandfather, Gerald Mason (Brenda Curtis) Powell, Owenton; paternal grandparents, Glen O. and Eleanor Duke, Owenton; uncle, David (Catherine) Duke; cousins, Logan Glen Duke, Jessica Marie Wilson, and Naomi June West; and four-legged friends, Little Bear, Weezie, Pumpkin and Ronie. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Louise Powell.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by Dr. Robert G. Baker. Burial will follow at the Lexington Cemetery, and a celebration of life meal will be provided after the burial at Calvary Baptist Church. Casket bearers will be Steven Riley, Kristian Junker, Carlos Peña-Rivera, Jimmie Blevins, Frank Gorena, Justan Borth, David Sanders and Demetrius Gay. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the church.
