NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City Comptroller John Liu knows plenty of people are predicting his political breakdown with his campaign finances under federal investigation. And he sees their point.
Some political analysts say there's no way he can become the next mayor of the nation's largest city.
Liu tells The Associated Press it's an "understandable assessment."
But the embattled Democrat isn't talking like someone merely running for reelection. In an AP interview this week he referred repeatedly to unnamed rivals. And he noted many months remain before the 2013 primary.
He says he had "no dealings" with his campaign's compliance with election law but the campaign acted appropriately.
Liu is the first Asian-American to win major elective office in New York. He says he has defied expectations in the past.
