SAO PAULO (AP) -- Former Brazil star Paulo Roberto Falcao has been hired by northeastern club Bahia.
Falcao was introduced on Tuesday to replace former South Africa coach Joel Santana, who is taking the job at Flamengo after Venderlei Luxemburgo was fired last week following internal disputes with club directors and players.
Falcao hasn't coached since being fired by Internacional last year after only 19 matches in command.
The elegant defensive midfielder started for Brazil at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups. He coached the national team at the 1991 Copa America and was also briefly in charge of Japan.
Bahia won the second of its two national titles in 1988, but recently went as low as the third division before returning to the top flight last year.
