MARANA, Ariz. (AP) -- Scottish golf is showing signs of life in the Match Play Championship.

Paul Lawrie, back at this event for the first time in nine years, held on to defeat Ryo Ishikawa and advance to the third round at Dove Mountain. He next plays Martin Laird, a fellow Scot, who defeated Matteo Manassero.

England has won the last two Match Play Championship titles with Luke Donald and Ian Poulter. Now its hopes lie with Lee Westwood, who built an early lead and defeated Robert Karlsson. It's the first time Westwood has reached the third round.

Tiger Woods was on the ropes again, trailing Nick Watney by two holes with three to play.
