Brewers hope to extend contracts, for GM, manager

PHOENIX (AP) -- Brewers owner Mark Attanasio says he "absolutely" intends to extend the contracts of Milwaukee general manager Doug Melvin and manager Ron Roenicke beyond this season.

Speaking Saturday as the Brewers held their first full-squad workout this spring, Attanasio said he will address the futures of Melvin and Roenicke before opening day. Melvin's contract is set to expire following this season and Roenicke is also signed through 2012 with the club holding an option for 2013.

Attanasio said Melvin asked him to wait on discussing his contract or Roenicke's deal until the club broke camp because he didn't want it to be a distraction. Melvin has been the Brewers' GM since 2002.

Milwaukee won 96 games and the NL Central title last season, its first under Roenicke.
