Minnesota women defeat Wisconsin 81-49 in tourney

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Kiara Buford scored 19 points and Minnesota shot 50 percent in an 81-49 victory over Wisconsin in a Big Ten first-round game Thursday.

The eighth-seeded Golden Gophers will face top-seeded and ninth-ranked Penn State in the quarterfinals Friday.

Big Ten Freshman of the Year Rachel Banham had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds for Minnesota (15-16). Kionna Kellogg added 11 points and Micaella Riche 10 as the Gophers made 32 of 64 shots and 5 of 9 from 3-point range.

Taylor Wurtz scored 13 points to pace the ninth-seeded Badgers (9-20), who were outrebounded 51-24.

The Gophers reeled off a 14-0 first-half run, holding Wisconsin scoreless for 5:10 and turning a 15-14 deficit into a 28-15 lead.

Minnesota extended the edge to 39-23 at intermission and was ahead by 38 late in the game.

The Gophers had lost six straight games to Wisconsin.
