Karstens throws 3 shutout innings for Pirates


BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) -- Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jeff Karstens tossed three scoreless innings Wednesday, but the Toronto Blue Jays' split squad rallied from a four-run deficit for an 8-6 victory.

Making his exhibition debut, Karstens gave up two hits and struck out one.

Backed by solo homers from Pedro Alvarez and Garrett Jones, the Pirates led 4-0 after three innings. Starling Marte hit a two-run shot in the seventh for Pittsburgh.

Blue Jays starter Kyle Drabek allowed three runs on four hits in two innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Toronto's Yan Gomes hit a solo homer in the seventh that broke a 4-all tie. Jonathan Diaz added a two-run double off Pirates reliever Jeff Locke, and Luis Valbuena later homered.
