PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) -- Madison Bumgarner struck out five in three shutout innings in his first start of spring training and the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 5-2 Thursday.
Edinson Volquez, also making his spring debut, pitched through a case of nerves and allowed a run in two innings. Volquez was pitching for the first time in a Padres uniform since being acquired in a Dec. 17 trade with the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed two hits and a walk and struck out one.
San Francisco outfielder Angel Pagan had an RBI single in three at-bats.
Outfielder Kyle Blanks hit a home run for the Padres and shortstop Everth Cabrera went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
Micah Owings allowed a hit and struck out two in two scoreless innings for the Padres.
