Schalke protests Matip red card against Twente

NYON, Switzerland (AP) -- Schalke has protested to UEFA after defender Joel Matip was sent off when Twente forward Luuk de Jong appeared to trip over his own leg to win a penalty in a Europa League match.

UEFA says its disciplinary panel will deal with the case on Tuesday.

Matip is currently suspended from the return match in Germany next Thursday, but could play if UEFA cancels his red card shown by Scottish referee Craig Thomson.

Twente will defend a 1-0 lead earned when De Jong scored from the penalty in Thursday's first leg.

Television footage showed that Matip made no contact when De Jong fell into the Schalke penalty area in the 61st minute. Instead the Dutch striker's right foot struck the back of his own left leg.
