LONDON (AP) -- Prosecutors say a man arrested on suspicion of racially abusing an Oldham player during an FA Cup match against Liverpool will not face charges due to "insufficient evidence."
A 20-year-old man from Liverpool was alleged to have shouted racial abuse at Oldham midfielder Tom Adeyemi from the stands during the second half of the Jan. 6 match at Anfield. He admitted shouting at the player but denied racist abuse.
Jane Roden, head of the Crown Prosecution Service's complex casework unit, says "enhanced CCTV footage and the high proportion of witness statements ... tend to support the suspect's version of events."
Adeyemi was reduced to tears by the incident and had to be comforted by teammates and opposing players before reporting it to match officials, who notified police.
