Lakers gamble chemistry in Derek Fisher trade

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -- The Los Angeles Lakers got younger and faster with two deadline trades that essentially exchanged Derek Fisher for Ramon Sessions.

They don't know whether they made themselves any better Thursday.

They also didn't know if Kobe Bryant would be angry after the Lakers dealt away Fisher, his longtime teammate and fellow team leader.

Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak didn't consult with Bryant before sending Fisher to the Houston Rockets and acquiring Sessions from the Cleveland Cavaliers for veterans Luke Walton and Jason Kapono.

Sessions is almost certainly an upgrade at point guard over Fisher, whose speed and skills have eroded considerably in his mid-30s.

But Kupchak realizes Fisher's absence off the court could hurt the Lakers, who counted on the union leader as a steadying influence in the locker room.
