SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The San Francisco 49ers have signed running back and special teams standout Rock Cartwright to a one-year contract.
The team made the announcement Friday, soon after reports emerged that the Niners and coach Jim Harbaugh had worked out quarterback Peyton Manning at Duke on Tuesday night. A person with knowledge of the workout confirmed it happened, speaking on condition of anonymity because the session hadn't been made public.
The addition of Cartwright, who played the past two seasons with the Oakland Raiders, should help fill a void left after Blake Costanzo signed a two-year contract with the Chicago Bears on Tuesday.
General manager Trent Baalke says the 49ers like Cartwright's versatility.
