LISBON, Portugal (AP) -- Sporting Lisbon failed to follow up its Europa League success with a win in the Portuguese league, losing 2-0 at Gil Vicente on Monday after goals from Rodrigo Galo and Claudio.

Galo scored with a long-range strike in the 13th minute, and Claudio converted a 55th-minute penalty following a foul by Sporting defender Stijn Schaars.

Schaars received a second booking in the 69th to leave Sporting with 10 men.

Sporting knocked out Manchester City in the last 16 of the Europa League last week.

Gil Vicente moved eight points clear of the drop zone, while Sporting stayed fifth.

Portuguese leader FC Porto leads Benfica and Braga by one point.
