Santos Laguna, Morelia stay on top in Mexico

MEXICO CITY (AP) -- Santos Laguna and Morelia both picked up victories over the weekend to remain top of Mexico's first division after 12 rounds of the Clausura championship.

Santos Laguna beat Queretaro 2-0 and Morelia won 3-1 against America. Both improved to 26 points, with reigning champions Tigres in third on 25 points after defeating Pumas 2-0 on Sunday.

In other results this weekend, Monterrey won 4-0 against Estudiantes Tecos, Tijuana defeated Atlas 2-0, Chivas beat Toluca 2-0, Jaguares won 3-2 against Pachuca, Cruz Azul drew 1-1 with Puebla and Atlante won 3-2 against San Luis.

Juan Pablo Rodriguez opened the scoring for Santos Laguna from the penalty spot in the 29th minute with United States international Herculez Gomez heading in from a corner in the 75th.

Last-place Queretaro went down to 10 men when Adrian Garcia was sent off in the 30th and, four minutes after halftime, Queretaro's Israel Martinez was also sent off.

A 25-yard (meter) strike from Christian Valdez and a tap-in by Miguel Sabah put Morelia ahead 2-0 after 20 minutes against America. Ecuadorian international Christian Benitez pulled one back for America in the 30th before Jaime Lozano extended Morelia's lead with a penalty in the 71st.

Tigres kept pace as Emanuel Cerda scored from close range in the 36th against Pumas with Lucas Lobos getting the second in the 78th.

Humberto Suazo opened the scoring for Monterrey in the second minute with Cesar Delgado, Angel Reyna and Aldo de Nigris getting the other goals. The victory moved Monterrey into fourth place with Estudiantes Tecos increasingly likely to be relegated at the end of the season.

Tijuana remains in the playoff chase with Argentine Jose Sand scoring in the 20th and Raul Enriquez getting the second in the 70th. Atlas' Leandro Cufre received a red card in the 57th before Joshua Abrego was sent off for Tijuana in the 67th.

Guadalajara Chivas remained undefeated in six league games and are three points off a playoff spot. Omar Arellano scored the club's first in the 25th and Hector Reynoso added the second with a penalty in the 62nd.

Jaguares went down to 10 men when Luis Miguel Noriega was sent off in the third minute, but two goals from Colombian Luis Gabriel Rey put them 2-0 up within 25 minutes. Goals from Segundo Castillo in the 37th and Felix Borja in the 73rd pulled Pachuca level before Luis Ricardo Esqueda got the winner for Jaguares in the 81st.

Emanuel Villa opened the scoring for Cruz Azul in the 32nd with U.S. international DaMarcus Beasley equalizing in the 57th for Puebla. Villa was sent off in the 86th after headbutting a Puebla player in the chest in an off-the-ball incident.

Two goals from Osvaldo Martinez helped Atlante to victory over San Luis. Martinez scored from a direct freekick in the 28th and added his second in the 51st. Michael Arroyo scored the third in the 82nd. Jesus Chavez equalized for San Luis in the 33rd and Cesar Villaluz got one back in the 87th. Oscar Vera was sent off for Atlante in the 85th.
