AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Akron's first season under coach Terry Bowden includes a road game at Tennessee.
The Zips announced their schedule on Thursday. The 12-game slate includes four games against bowl teams from last season and a visit to Knoxville to play the Volunteers on Sept. 22. Bowden played Tennessee when he was Auburn's coach from 1993-98.
Bowden is taking over a program than won just two games the past two seasons. Akron will open on Aug. 30 at home against Central Florida. The Zips will play six home games and one on national TV as their Nov. 20 finale at Toledo will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Bowden said by the time his team finishes its non-conference schedule "we better know how to play football" before facing Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 29 in their MAC opener.
