Red Bulls end Rodgers' contract after visa denied

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) -- Luke Rodgers' contract has been terminated by Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls after he was denied a U.S. visa.

The 30-year-old English forward joined the Red Bulls in January 2011 and scored nine goals in 23 league appearances and 10 goals overall last year. He played previously for Red Bulls coach Hans Backe in England for fourth-tier Nott County.

The Red Bulls said after the visa denial that it would be in "all parties' best interests" to end his contract "so he could play elsewhere."
