MANCHESTER, England (AP) -- Manchester United bolstered its defensive options Tuesday by signing Alexander Buttner, while Chilean striker Angelo Henriquez was granted a work permit to join the Premier League club.
The 23-year-old Buttner signed a five-year deal to leave Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem, a day after United opened the Premier League season with a 1-0 loss at Everton.
"Alexander is one of the best young left backs in Europe and we're delighted to sign him," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "He's someone we've been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position."
In the striking department, United expects the 18-year-old Henriquez to complete his move to England after being granted a work permit.
"He will play his final game for Universidad de Chile tomorrow and a further announcement on him joining United will be made in due course," United said in a statement.
