Tommy Barnes Memorial

Go Frankfort, the Frankfort YMCA and Friends of Tommy Barnes are working together to honor one of Frankfort's favorite sons, Tommy Barnes. The former Western Hills High School graduate, who went on to become one of University of Louisville's finest student athletes, passed away in February 2010 at the early age of 40. Tommy played shortstop for the University's baseball team during the early 1990's and was a 2009 inductee into the U of L Athletic Hall of Fame. Tommy is the University's baseball career hits leader with 287, and also holds the school record for the longest hitting streak at 25 games and holds the single-game record for assists with 10.

He passed away after an 18 month battle with cancer and is survived by his wife and two children. Tommy influenced many people in his life not only with his athletic abilities but also with the passion in which he lived. After receiving his diagnosis Tommy continued living life to the fullest and inspiring others to always give it their best regardless of their circumstances.

We are looking to honor our friend by creating a memorial in his honor. We will repair the Frankfort youth baseball fields affiliated with the Frankfort YMCA and rename them the "Thomas Carter Barnes IV" Fields. Both the Frankfort YMCA and Tommy's wife Lindsay agree that this memorial is appropriate to honor him as the fields are the same fields on which Tommy coached his children in T-ball.

The work we plan to do on the fields includes correcting drainage issues associated with runoff water through the construction of a retaining wall and french drain system. As part of the retaining wall construction, we will erect a bronze statue of a coach instructing a player close to the ages of Tommy's children to reinforce his influence in their lives and the lives of the other players he coached. In addition to the statue and landscaping surrounding the memorial, we would like to establish a scholarship fund in Tommy's honor for a high school baseball student athlete in the Franklin County area.
