The Second Annual Literacy Night is being held on Tuesday, October 4, 2011 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Elkhorn Middle School in Frankfort, Kentucky. The opening event includes guest speaker and author, Lee Ann Hager who will speak about her Road Trip series and young adult novel, The Ragged Suitcase. Afterwards, Hager will be part of a meet and greet with visitors.
After the opening festivities, there will be various locations throughout the school where students, parents and their guests can choose to participate in writing a never-ending story, win a free book in the book walk, do fun drama improvisations, or browse through the Scholastic Book Fair. Participants can also make their own journal, write postcards to the soldiers that have been adopted by Elkhorn Middle School, as well as speak with a representative from the Paul Sawyier Public Library who will have library card applications, free bookmarks, and more.
Jessica Clark, Elkhorn Middle School Language Arts teacher, is coordinating the event this year. She wants the students and parents to come together and realize that literacy can be lifelong family activities, "The theme for Literacy Night this year is travel, the motto being "Discovering New Places through Reading and Writing". We really want to emphasize that literacy is not just for school, but an enduring practice that will allow for endless opportunities and encounters as you journey through life."
New this year is the Parent Lounge being coordinated by the Elkhorn Middle PTSA. Parents have a chance to connect while their child participates in the literacy activities. Every student will receive a free goody bag, including a book provided by Half-Price Books, as they enter and a homework pass. Refreshments, provided by Dominos, will be served at 7:30 p.m. where special door prizes will be given away.
