Since the beginning of November 77.5 percent of the articles remain locked. I understand the need to make money, and have a paid subscription, but I don't recall this level of lockdown. It appears to have started before this time period, but I only calculated this month.
Also, in the same period of time I have noticed a marked decline in artcle comments. Coincidence? I think not. Just sayin'.

The Courier Journal is a Gannett paper and has a paywall as of earlier this year. If you don't subscribe then you are limited to 20 articles per month. Exceptions to the paywall are section fronts, obituaries, and classified ads. You can find a number of articles discussing their changes by using a search engine.-------------------------------------------- The Herald Leader is instituting a similar program; limited free articles per month. Again, using a search on the newspaper name with the word paywall will get you to news and information on the topic.
Thats just it 1713 I am not trying to solve this situation. I say if the state Journal wants to charge a fee its their buisness and people should stop crying about it. The way the free market is set up if you dont like it dont buy it. If enough people dont buy it the buisness will either shut down or change their policies. lol, really? Where does the SJ get their leads from? Mostly AP. They also ask citizens to call it in. And judging by a recent story, they use Topix. I noticed the latter rather frequently albeit more disguised. As trashy as that place is, it seems to be a great source for news stories. lol Nice to see you got your posting privileges restored. How is the dam doing?
So, how is that going to work, MD? The local TV stations have very few if any investigative reporters, and depend on the newspapers and wire services (like AP, UPI) to get their leads and stories.
What has Mach570 said that would solve anything?
Steve it is Dec.6 & I'm still getting full access to the lexington herald.. The state journal is locking more since this post started.
WLEX18 has started running a new commercial targeting the local newspapers for locking their online content.... "Tired of seeing this (image of a lock) when you go to your local newpaper? Don't worry WLEX will never prevent you from accessing our online content. Soon we will be bringing you even more of your local news articles from all over the state. WLEX the one you can count on..."
It dosn't take much thought to solve things the liberal way. Let the goverment pay for it.
Maybe less locked articles and the potential of more visitors to this page would entice more advertisers to place ads on the site. I have noticed a significant decrease in ads. I'm not sure locking everything is a good business model. SJ content isn't that interesting to pay for it.

Typical. One home invasion & one armed robbery but the articles are locked before a description of the thugs are given. I really don't see how the state journal will lose money to give this very important info away. Oh well......
Anderson news isn't locked for me steve. I don't know if it has to do with me being registered with them forever now or what but I get full access. I also get 100% of the Louisville Courier also. I will take the crow but if ya wanna get technical, the herald is still free as we speak. Thanks steve :-)
1713 now you know all you need to do is apply for goverment assistance and let the goverment pay for your subsciption. Thank God for Santa Clau-- I mean Obama :)
Looks like the Courier has some kind of 30-day free trial, so they don't provide their content for free. 100% of the Anderson News articles are locked. (slowly stirs crow soup)

Thanks Steve. I understand it to mean that there will still be a lot available to the none subscribers. The point was that lots of other online papers are free for people to comment on. Courier? L-Burg?

Whether you guys pay for full privileges or not is your prerogative...just don't complain about not being able to play like the rest of us paying customers when you don't. There is no such thing as a free lumch.
anonymous_1713 The security of posting anonymously creates cyberthugs out of every bottom feeder hiding in their mother's basements. I tend not to purchase products that do not function properly. Then again why should we expect the SJ to supply a comments forum with the ability to post proper English and punctuation,.....when they don't expect their reporters to provide it in print, yet I should pay for it?

Yup D, you are correct. It is their ball and they can do as they wish. I just miss the days when articles would unlock after a few days and the great discussions that would result.

The issue at hand is, the only people the SJ wants to have an expressed opinion are those who are putting money in their coffers. "If you do not buy OUR product, we could care less about what you think." Then there are those they have around who are related to them, paid by them, or pander for them, who do nothing but repeat the same old tired rhetoric "If you bought a subscription, you could post all you want, blah, blah, blah.".....
Ukfan, a home subscription service qualifies you for a free online account. You should contact the SJ and have your online account enabled.
I believe that need4speed does have a valid point. But I am not going to pay to read it online when I get it delivered at home.
Are you so illiterate that you didn't read that I have a subscription? I also can read what ever I wish. My point was that the continuing lockdown has killed most of the discourse on this page.
Are you so hard-headed that you don't know that it helps to have an on-line subscription of the STATE JOURNAL? I am able to open anything and can read it without any problem.
Well, I guess it's working, because I became a subscriber after growing tired of the locked articles. I opted for the web only subscription, because I figured if I took home delivery then the paper would go straight to the recycling bin. What I couldn't quite grasp is the fact that home delivery is only one dollar more per month. I don't think they are charging enough for printing and delivery service.
Obama won, the stock market is down, jobless claims are on the rise...their income has dropped, they need the revenue.
