Some People Can't Wait

The rally to support Senate Bill11, the Gatewood Galbraith Medical Marijuana Act, was held on Wednesday 6 Feb 2013 at the State Capitol Annex. It was reported on the 5 and 6pm newscasts on channel 27 WKYT. There were a lot of supporters there and in the 6pm story they interviewed a man paralyzed with a back broken in 4 places. He spoke of the positive effect medical marijuana has had on his condition in dealing with his chronic and intractable pain. His mother also spoke and she totally supports her son’s use of medical marijuana. She sighted the difference between using prescription pain killers and medical marijuana. She said that the depression, addiction and lethargy that comes with prescription pain killers was not present when her son uses medical marijuana. Her son was coherent, positive and tolerated his pain and condition much better. She also stated that his thoughts of suicide went away when using medical marijuana. (It is interesting to note that Veterans report having much success using medical marijuana to treat their Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. In addition, suicide rates are reported to be down in states that have medical marijuana laws.)

The State Police oppose the bill along with the anti drug group UNITE. They cited difficulty in distinguishing medical marijuana and illegal recreational marijuana. Actually that would be simple. A qualified medical marijuana patient will just show the officer who stopped him a State medical marijuana card. If the patient is in compliance then no problem. Case solved! On the Kentucky Tonight show on KET the Head of the State Police, in objecting to the Hemp Bill, sighted the gateway theory but that has been debunked many times.

SB11 is currently in the Judicial Committee where it died last year without a hearing. During that year 9090 of our fellow citizens were arrested for marijuana offenses and had their lives turned upside down. Illness and disability do not care whether the medicine is legal or not, only that it works, and some of our citizens have conditions that cannot wait another year till the time is somehow more ‘right’ than it is now, this year.

No one in the 4000 year history of man using marijuana has ever died from an overdose.

There have however been patients who have died because this medicine, which works very well for them, has been taken away. Several have died after being remanded to prison for simple possession related to their conditions.

Our legislators can prevent any more of this needless suffering by simply passing Senate Bill 11 and not making Kentucky’s sick and disabled risk life and freedom because they were forced to wait another year to use a medicine the citizens of 18 States and the District of Columbia are already legally using.

  • "4893, it is you and ihate who are threatened by the light of science, logic and reason and choose to remain in the darkness of ignorance and superstition." Look just because you copy and paste from every know website and also spend countless hours rewriting your posts with the use of a thesaurus doesn’t make you smart, knowledgeable, or above anyone else… You take all these posts of your so serious and personal which has a reverse effect on what you are trying to obtain! Keep saving the world my brother! I commend your efforts!

  • 4893, it is you and ihate who are threatened by the light of science, logic and reason and choose to remain in the darkness of ignorance and superstition. You know, they didn't call them the Dark Ages for nothing...a period of intellectual darkness and barbarity. The Drug War is just that...and you helped.

  • Don't go near the light 1713, umm I mean Carrol Ann!

  • As any venture capitalist will tell you, the BEST thing that they can ever hope for is a problem that is never solved. That is what our nation's Drug War is, a problem that is NEVER solved, predicated on fear and hyperbole. There is this whole crony capitalist security complex that has been built around this problem that is never solved, and they are going to make sure that it never will be. Those people are making huge sums of money, nearly $50 Billion a year, fighting a war that will never be won for a problem that will never be solved. Some of you who are their minions are just too dumb, scared, etc., to know it. The only thieves here are taking your tax dollars, not trying to show you the light. It would benefit you to learn the difference. But you never will, because you are a big part of the problem that will never be solved.

  • Well said 4893....you might as well quit commenting though because you can't argue with an oxygen thief !

  • There is ample scientific evidence that cannabis offers real promise in the treatment of some cancers and many other maladies, which blows the DEA's contention that it has NO medical value right out of the water. There is nothing "holy" (or mystical) about it, just peer reviewed studies. The DEA needs to get out of the way of medical researchers and let them do unfettered research that will determine what kind of cancers and the best ways to administer the specific properties of cannabis to obtain the best medical outcomes. Right NOW, it is exceedingly difficult for even prestigious medical research facilities like Harvard Medical School, to get the DEA waivers necessary for serious research. That is unconscionable. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ No serious researchers are contending that simply smoking pot is the answer...that is the stuff that ignorant folks like YOU use to try to discredit ANY research. You are unwittingly carrying the DEA's water on this significant health issue. It doesn't end there...

  • Well, now, 4893, the healing properties have always been 1713's main argument pro weed. Cigarette smoke evil cancer producer, weed holy cancer curer... lol

  • There's a big difference between pain relieving and cancer curing! If it’s just a pain reliever, which is what most of your articles and links conclude, then no one is killing anyone by not allowing it. I have no doubt that if pot was found to actually “cure” cancer then it would be allowed and in the pockets of every person, but until then, in today’s society, it’s just not going to fly… Too many conservatives and Red States politicians.

  • Thou shall not kill comes to mind...

  • " Do you still deserve to go to heaven? "... Really? I'm pretty sure that no where in the Bible it says... The Lord looked down upon his people and said, "Free the smoke, let us all rejoice and be laid back!"

  • ihateetc.: How cavalierly you discount the potential of cannabis as well as the fact that it's compounds are already being used effectively in many commercial medicines in the world. How much smarter you seem than all of those doctors and medical researchers in the AMA with your chippy one-liners! What the heck do they know, after all! It is people like you, with your obvious superior brains that are seriously impeding or preventing our medical researchers from further research into the promising properties of cannabis in treating cancers. ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... So, I pose you one question, what if you and all of the other armchair Einsteins are wrong and that in 50 years it is found that indeed cannabis holds the keys to unlocking the mysteries of cancer? And what you people have done to restrict even the study of these promising compounds cost millions of people their lives and untold suffering. Do you still deserve to go to heaven? http://cannabisscience.com/ http://cannabisscience.com/products.html Cannabinoids are a group of terpenophenolic compounds present in Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L). Currently, 538 natural compounds were identified from this plant. 43 of these 108 are identified as cannabinoids, which are C21 compounds uniquely present in Cannabis sativa L. There are ten main types of cannabinoids and fourteen different cannabinoid subtypes. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the principal psychoactive ingredient in cannabis, but it also has other effects. Cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabinol (CBN) are the other two most prevalent natural cannabinoids and have received the most study. All three are listed as ingredients in Sativex, the only multi-cannabinoid medicine currently approved for marketing (only in Canada.) Cannabinoids were first discovered in the 1940s, when CBD and CBN were identified. THC was not identified until 1964, but by that time cannabis had been removed from the pharmacopeiae of most countries, making further research on the plant difficult. There are three general types of cannabinoids: 1Phytocannabinoids occur uniquely in the cannabis plant. 2Endogenous cannabinoids are produced in the bodies of humans and other animals. 3Synthetic cannabinoids are similar compounds produced in a laboratory. Forms of synthetic THC are available by prescription in a number of countries, including the US. In the US, synthetic THC is marketed as Marinol.

  • 1713--There is all kinds of evidence I don't have to look you keep providing me with allthe information I need.--------------------------I did "just loook" and it says it MAY have been used around that time. It DOESN'T anywhere that it was to treat dreadful illness like cancer and AIDS. Instead it talks it MAYBE being used to treat minor illness like headaches, hunger, PMS, VD, the runs,etc....No mention of ANY serious illness being CURED by smoking some weed.-----------------------------What may help cure AIDS more than marijuana is to pass out condoms or tell the men that you speak of to stop having mulitple wives many of which who are around 12 years old when they are forced into marriage---------------instead of using weed to cure the runs, tell people to stop bathing in the rivers in which cows they worship poop in those same waters...----Oh and I really love the one about how it cures "absentmindedness" really? gotta love that one.

  • "A native of Central Asia, cannabis may have been cultivated as much as 10,000 years ago. It was certainly cultivated in China by 4000 B.C. and in Turkestan by 3000 B.C. It has long been used as a medicine in India, China, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Africa, and South America. The first evidence of the medicinal use of cannabis is in an herbal published during the reign of the Chinese Emperor Chen Nung 5000 years ago. It was recommended for malaria, constiipation, rheumatic pains, "absentmindedness" and "female disorders." Another Chinese herbalist recommended a mixture of hemp, resin, and wine as an analgesic during surgery. In India cannabis has been recommended to quicken the mind, lower fevers, induce sleep, cure dysentery, stimulate appetite, improve digestion, relieve headaches, and cure venereal disease. In Africa it was used for dysentery, malaria, and other fevers." There is all kinds of evidence if you just look.

  • 1713 first of all let me clarify this. If anyone reading this is terminally ill and the ONLY way you can feel better is to smoke a little weed then have at it. I wish death or illwill on nobody.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1713 do you watch the comedy show Big Bang Theory? If so you would make a great stand info for Sheldon because you don't understand sarcasm... I was being sarcastic when he reported the 4,000 year theory. There is no shread of proof that 4,000 years ago that man used marijuana to cure illness. I guess they found the prescription for it written on cave walls....and I do now what deductive reasoning and at best its an educated guess and perhaps even an uneducated guess. So deduce that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1713 I followed the link YOU provided on the Harvard study about marijuana curing diseases. As usual libs tend to delete some simple facts when they try to make a point. This study YOU referenced has ONLY been done on MICE and NOT humans...it also says and I quote it "MIGHT" have anti tumor activity read that again it doesn't say it CURES cancer it says it "MIGHT" have anti tumor activity...and to follow up on that an article in the Huffington Post a liberal news outlet and not from Fox news. In another study in the wacky liberal world of SF at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco researchers reported NOT marijuana but its COMPOUND "MAYBE" have some anti cancer properties of marijuana. "HOWEVER" these only have been done in the lab and on animals NOT people. They also found it was not marijuana directly that provided this but a "COMPOUND" in the marijuana. They also reported going out with your hippy buddies in a volkswagon van and lighting a big fat one would not help. "We used injections in the animal testing and are also testing pills," he said. "But you could never get enough Cannabidiol for it to be effective just from smoking." In an article from as recent as January 2013 the National Cancer Institute reported that again a "COMPOUND" from marijuana "MAY" protect against certain types of tumors....oh and they repeated this has only been studied in MICE and RATS... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Heads shops are bogus. All you have is some some freshman chemist flunky behind the counter and his buddy Jeff Spicoli walk in and say; hey dude like I tweaked my back riding this narly wave can you help me out? His buddy the stoner who has no medical experience says why sure bro take some of my maui wowee, mixed with some jamaican jumbo and a dash of B.C. bud and your cured... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ and you call me ignorant? Ha hypothesis that !!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ If someday they can PROVE that it does cure a disease and I hope it does and I hope it does soon. But studies do NOT show that yet, and if it was it needs to administered by a medically trained personnel and not on some supermarket corner shop.....

  • Thomyv to ihateoxygenthieves- Meth is schedule2 and can be prescribed by a Doc METH CANNOT be prescribed by any doctor....If you are talking about ONE of only several ingredients to make meth pseudoephedrine; Yes, but pseudoephedrine is NOT meth its only used in the process of making it.

  • Thanks thomyv, but your example just exemplifies the witch hunt that is being carried out by the Michigan State Police and some of the right wing Republicans in the courts and legislature. "In the latest move to curtail medical marijuana activities, the Michigan State Police on Tuesday arrested a prominent physician in central Michigan known for specializing in recommending medical marijuana. Dr. Harwell certified two undercover officers for use of medical marijuana without viewing any patient records nor performing a physical examination, according to the charges." .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. "Harwell, owner of the Triple M Clinics was taken into custody by MSP officers on Tuesday, February 12 and was held overnight without bond at the Wexford County Jail." Without bond? Was the good doctor deemed by the judge to be such a risk to the safety and well being of society that they held him over night in jail? Really? ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "Harwell certified two undercover officers for use of medical marijuana without viewing any patient records nor performing a physical examination, according to the charges." The doctor verified "severe and chronic pain as a specific diagnosis on a physician’s certification…which constituted the debilitating medical condition and did so without establishing a bona fide physician patient relationship and without establishing a factual basis to form the professional opinion that the person was likely to receive therapeutic or palliative benefit from the use of marijuana.” .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Doctors do that all the time with their patients who complain about "severe and chronic pain" before they prescribe narcotic pain killers to them, so why shouldn't they do it with marijuana which has none of the side effects and toxicity of those dangerous drugs? Exactly how are doctors supposed to "verify" severe and chronic pain anyway? Who are we to believe, a board certified brain surgeon or some political hack like "Republican Tonya Schuitmaker, who became a member of the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee in 2011 and is now the Senate’s President Pro Tempore. She is a former State Chairperson for ALEC, a think tank credited for generating some of the nation’s most conservative public policy."?

  • thomyv: "Doctor was just arrested for writing bogus scri[ts for medical marijuana in Michigan, as he should be! Just as he would be writing a bogus script for ANY drug!! And why wouldn't they be arrested if they are breaking the law." ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Methinks that your story is bogus (did you see that on FOX News or what? ;-)) and here is why: "The Michigan Medical Marijuana Certification Center is a professional medical marijuana clinic. The Michigan Medical Marijuana Certification Center was created to provide qualified patients with physician certifications for the use of medical marijuana. This certification is required in order to obtain valid a medical marijuana ID card from the State of Michigan." It just does not make any sense what your story was contending. Plus, I couldn't Google it...I give it a Pants on Fire rating. ......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... http://www.michiganmedicalmarijuanacertification.com/

  • Doctor was just arrested for writing bogus scri[ts for medical marijuana in Michigan, as he should be! Just as he would be writing a bogus script for ANY drug!! And why wouldn't they be arrested if they are breaking the law.

  • 4893, but the fact is that the only thing that is "crap" about medical marijuana is your understanding of the science that is behind it...and of that, you don't know crap. Enough said.

  • I wish, for once, someone would just say... We politician squandered all the money and if we allow hemp to be raised we can make back some of the money from taxing it! OR... I would like to smoke without getting in trouble! I would be so much better than hiding behind all of the far reaching medical crap! Is it a pain reliever, sure! Would it help some people, sure! But let's be honest, there will be so many false claims of pain in order to get "medical" maijuana! If you want to smoke, go through the process, get a doctor to sign off on you, and you pay the taxes on it then that's fine with me!

  • to ihateoxygenthieves- Meth is schedule2 and can be prescribed by a Doc. Heroin is schedule1 and cannot be prescribed by a Doc however we have dilaudid and methodone both synthetic heroin and they can be prescribed by a Doc. So we only have marijuana that is more restricted than Heroin. For example, to do research on marijuana a researcher must get the marijuana for the study from the government and as far as i know that is only required for a study involving marijuana. Oh, the study must show some kind of harm or the government will not support it. ( the government has NEVER suppilied the marijuana for any study) The Government originally supported the Tashkin study which was supposed to link smoked maarijuana with lung cancer. When the results of the study showed that there was no connection, That regular marijuana users got head, neck and lung cancer at the same rate as people who do not smoke at all, the government withdrew it's support. I would suggest you go to Colorado and ck it out. I'm sure you would be suprised asyoue actual lack of knowledge of the subject is woefully lacking!

  • ihateetc.: "So man has been smoking marijuana for 4,000 thousand years? Not a single overdose, must have taken you along time to look up all those autopsy reports....". ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... There are more ways to verify a fact than to actually be there to witness the event personally...it is called deductive reasoning. Ever heard of it? Deductive reasoning, as the name implies, is used by scientists to “deduce” the causes of natural phenomena. Deductive reasoning is a cornerstone of the scientific method because scientists often cannot directly observe a cause and can only observe its consequences. ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Because we know that cannabis is non-toxic, scientists can deduce that it has never killed anyone. Toxicity is the degree to which a substance can damage an organism. Toxicity can refer to the effect on a whole organism, such as an animal, bacterium, or plant, as well as the effect on a substructure of the organism, such as a cell (cytotoxicity) or an organ. Even water can be toxic in high doses and many people have died from drinking too much...but not cannabis. Regarding the safety of cannabis, it has been described as one of the safest therapeutic substances known to man, and safer than most common vegetables - DEA Judge Young, 1988. Medical records and study of worldwide pertinent writings over the millennia show that at no time has any person died from the ingestion of any amount of cannabis, ever. 100% of the scores of studies by American universities and research facilities show that toxicity does not exist in cannabis. (U.C.L.A, Harvard, Temple, etc.) ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... ihateetc.: "I didn't know marijuana cured diseases...I thought it just reportedly eased symptoms." How about cancer? Many studies from prestigious medical research facilities all over the world support the hypothesis that cannabis ingestion has a deleterious effect on cancer cell metastasis. Watch this: http://www.endalldisease.com/harvard-study-says-marijuana-cures-cancer/ ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ To answer your simple question, "They can't wait for what?" They can't wait because they are dying! Let's just hope that you never have to find out why they can't wait personally...but if karma has its way... Your ignorance about this subject is only exceeded by your hostility. That is called "punching down", BTW!

  • They can't wait for what? To get stoned? So man has been smoking marijuana for 4,000 thousand years? Not a single overdose, must have taken you along time to look up all those autopsy reports....Then you say that people have died because they can't get marijuana? I didn't know marijuana cured diseases...I thought it just reportedly eased symptoms. Legal in 18 states so that means its illegal in 32. Do you know in San Francisco it was legal up until a few months ago to expose your genitals in public, including parks where children play. So should we adapt that law because SF does it? How come you don't see medical doctors opening these headshops in those states? Instead its a fly by night chemist or college flunky pot grower. And you think its just a simple fix just flash your state I am a pothead medical card and problem solved between legal and illegal. Do you know whats in meth, heroine, cocaine? Know why people use those drugs because at the time it makes them "feel good" should we legalize those to. Maybe we can open meth clinics for narcoleptic people so they won't fall asleep for days and help them with their illness.

  • I love how all of a sudden, especially around election times and bill proposals; everyone in Kentucky is suddenly a Hemp Farmer and a Coal Miner!

  • Wait wait Steve_Fry... you forgot the newest one...Punching down! Bahahahahahaha!

  • It's interesting (or is it big brother?) that I'm seeing a VapeWorld ad on this page.

  • You forgot to say "low-hanging fruit." (nothing wrong with it at all.)

  • Now wait a minute Steve_Fry, that is an unfair statement and a cheap shot. It also shows that you still don't have a handle on nuance...which is probably why they aren't letting you write stories down there. As I have clearly stated, I have no beef with the Sheriff's Office per se, just its policy of diverting our precious tax dollars to feed its incessant obsession with penny ante druggies instead of preventing and investigating REAL "serious crime" (as defined in the KSP study). And anyway, what is WRONG with a taxpayer saying that on a public forum?

  • Glad to see you've let up on the Sheriff's department.

  • Prohibition of marijuana is over in 18 states, including Colorado and Washington where even recreational use was legalized. And we all should say, good riddance because marijuana prohibition costs taxpayers $41.8 Billion a year. The only question is, "Who will be the last person to have their lives ruined in this failed war on some drugs?"
