Evil at Carino's

Steffi Kaizun Published:

This past weekend, my group left Johnny Carino's Italian restaurant in Frankfort. We were celebrating the life of a friend who had passed away, recently. Our spirits were high as we exited the door, near closing time. A trio was smoking less than a yard from the door. One of my group has severe asthma, and had a reaction to the smoke. We brought her inside, and the restaurant, graciously, assisted us. A few minutes later, the young female who had, inadvertently or otherwise, blown the smoke, came in and, seemingly friendly, asked if my friend was okay. One of the others in my group said, "Yes; she has asthma." Inexplicably, the female then said, "I know what asthma is! I am intelligent!" We were stunned for a moment, and then another in my party - - a cancer survivor - - politely said, "Well, thank you for your apology - - ", at which point the female said, "Oh, I wasn't apologizing!", at which point my friend practically ordered the female out of the restaurant, and, of course, the female decided to verbally escalate things, naturally defending her right to be a moron. The entire time this was going on, the hostess just stood there, until another in my group asked her to call the manager; in response, the hostess said in a loud voice, "Y'all need to CHILL OUT!" Effective? No. At that point, another female from the smoking trio came in, and decided to help her friend harrass us. At that point, I got between my group and the two females (mostly to protect the two females who were significantly shorter and scrawnier than anyone in my group), who finally got the hint and left, before the manager appeared. Now, you'd think that would be the end of the story, right? Wrong! The third member of the smoking trio went to my car (which I had driven to the door to assist a handicapped member of my group), and he decided to spit on the driver door. This incident started with smoke, and nearly blew up due to rude behavior, by three animals in human clothing, who were no better than thugs. This is an indicator of what is wrong with society: We let cockroaches get away with virtually everything. That's why bullying is on the rise, why gang mentality is on the rise, and why people feel it necessary to use guns instead of simply walking away. Cockroaches breed, when not crushed. I'm sure the trio is still gloating over how they assaulted people more than twice their age. I gave descriptions of the trio and their vehicle plate to the police.

  • Yeah, sure. Whatever you say.

  • You shouldn't even be kidding about weapons on the internet or anywhere else. Some people would take you seriously. Law Enforcement checks this internet also as requested by the STATE JOURNAL.

  • I was just kidding about the pistol thing.

  • It doesn't do any good to carry a pistol if it's not registered and you haven't completed a Concealed Class and received a permit to carry one. Guns don't settle anything. You're really asking for trouble if you carry a gun for scenarios such as this. Purchase some pepper spray; it keeps them suffering for awhile and their eyes continue to burn and they can't see.

  • This is why everybody should carry a pistol.

  • Restaurant rage!

  • Agree with ya there, Need.

  • A thread worthy of Topix...

  • There is a basic rule of civility that should have applied here, but apparently did not: The 3 people smoking outside were the offending party, by definition, as it was their smoke that caused physical harm to someone who HAD to go through their toxic fog to get out of the building. It is an assault, whether it is intentional or unintentional, the only difference being in the degree. The offending party that causes the injury ALWAYS has the obligation the be contrite and apologetic to those that they have hurt. An apology is the least that they could have done to try to mitigate the harm that they caused. That obviously was not what happened. Nobody has the right to hurt somebody else and be so callous and cavalier about it...that is where the compario with the cockroaches comes in.

  • Yet the 'offenders' managed to portray themselves as "animals" in their very contradicting replies. Let me guess, you were number three of the trio. You three dug your own grave there. Pray you never have somebody with asthma or CF in your family. Then again, you might actually figure why these elderly were so upset.

  • I also was persent for this unfortunate event, and yes i agree that at one point both parties were in the wrong. First and formost i keep reading this respect your elders line over and over and over something like a skipping record one of which im sure all of these so called "elders" would know about. The rudeness most defnetly started with these elders "nicely asking them to move" no it was an overbearing sense of "We are of a higher level of being and you must obey." Not a understanding and sensible human trying to get a serious point across. Read the way she describes these so called smoking trio, listen to how foul and demented she tries to portray their demeanors. Just the idea that any other person can shoot someone down this quickly and try to demean them infront of the public barading them like animals is sickening. She has a jaded and bias view on the whole evening and one of which no one should ever take in a literal sense. This disparage and insulting post should be removed for her ignorance.

  • wowzerz, how many times are you going to contradict yourself? Ya need to stick with one version if you want anybody to believe your side but quite frankly, I think you told what really happened with your multiple statements.

  • Steve_Fry, it is House Bill 190. ......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... http://www.kentucky.com/2013/02/14/2516778/governor-continues-push-for-statewide.html

  • you can believe whatever you would like to, like it matters in the long run anyway. In you comments you have proved you are as ignorant as the lady that posted this story. Her friend never had an asthma attack, they came back into the resturaunt and waited for us to leave just so she could once again bother our group of friends. It just amazes me how someone can think they are above someone else and proceed to call people thugs and cockroaches, and really expect respect? We have already shown this to everyone that was involved and all thought it to be comical. I can only hope that "Steffi" learned from this incident and will hopefully reflect on the bad attitude and mindset that has been instilled into her simple brain, and change her ways! once again good day.

  • They went about the situation in a very rude way. If they would've asked us politely to move because their friend has asthma that would've been the end of it. They treated us like we were criminals, told us to leave, harrassed our table, and then called the police. If we were the ones out of control the hostess would've told us to "chill out" not them. We left because they were closing, and because the situation was getting out of control. The manager would'nt have escorted us out. We spent over $150 celebrating an occasion as well. This could have all been avoided if they asked us politely but they didn't, therefore it escalated into a problem. If someone is rude to me don't expect me to be nice to you. I'm sorry your friend has asthma and had a reaction, but I am not sorry about anything that was said because you caused the whole situation to blow up.

  • Spitting on a car can be cited as disorderly conduct. Funny, somehow I don't believe Thatonegirl's or wowzerz's version. The way they state their case makes them look exactly like Kaizun described them. Kaizun, by their own account they went outside during or before the meal but apparently after they ordered. That kind of nicotine addiction will get them eventually. Karma may take its time but it'll get them. They they'll be the ones gasping for air. Wonder if at that point they'll still have friends who'll remember their life as worth celebrating.

  • Hey!!!I was at the resturaunt during this incident! So lets set this story straight. " One of the others in my group said, "Yes; she has asthma."" is not what she said, what the friend in her group said is "You don't understand what asthma is?" very rudely in fact. Also she never asked anyone to move, she came outside, looked at my friends with her arms crossed and stated "you going to move or what?" Another funny thing you said is that you ordered us out of the resturaunt. Thats quite funny considering no one ordered us or even asked us to leave the resturaunt. Another thing that you completely forgot to add in your story is the point in which you came to our table and started lecturing one of my friends while we were eating, another very rude gesture from you. At which point i told YOU to leave. Then as we were leaving, my friend (girl that was smoking) went up to you to apologize, you then quoted a bible verse to her and continued to tell her what she did wrong. Don't know if you know this or not but you are one of those people that give christians a bad name, quoting bible verses when in fact you are the one being very rude and "un christian" like. One more point i must address is the "skrawny lil girl" that you said "got the hint" was actually trying to keep you from getting into a confrontation. So yes this was evil at carinos, but not from us, I'm always one to give elderly people the respect they deserve, but you must give respect to receive it and in this night you were deserving of nothing but a swift kick in the ***, to which you sadly did not receive. Also no one spit on your car lol, if anyone did it was probably God for making him look bad! good day!

  • I would also like to point out that respect should be earned, and not freely given, even to those older than you. If you first disrespect someone by telling them to leave the establishment they're spending money in, you can't expect them to be respectful back.

  • I personally know the 'evil' group of people that were smoking outside. *Gasp!* And know that none of them would ever stoop so low as to spit on someone's car, so that is an out-and-out lie. However, if you had that big of an issue with someone smoking outside, there is another exit door on the Carino's building you could have used, or just waited for them to get done with their cigarettes. The fact that you and your friends were out celebrating a macabre event, does not give you the right to put a downer on other people's nights out. I'm not sure how this escalated into police involvement, as there isn't anything illegal about this encounter, and I sincerely hope that the officer laughed in your face.

  • "Kentucky is one of six states without a statewide smoke-free air policy...that obviously needs to change ... Call your state Senator and Representative and tell them to support the Governor's proposal"? Which proposal is that?

  • the snarky attitude and rude behaviour are subjective, and we have only the author's word for it----not exactly an unbiased account. Besides, from what I read, the author's group was just as snarky and rude. And judgmental. That's my point.

  • aga, you've missed the point as according to the post, that ain't exactly what the smoking girls did. You left out all of the snarky attitude and rude behaviour or the kids and the total lack of respect for their elders, which is really what this was about. The smoking was just a catalyst. It could have been about anything. Some people's kids!

  • According to the author, what exactly did the smoking trio do? 1) they smoked outside, which is within their rights to do. 2) when an asthmatic person had an attack, they asked if she was okay. 3) when the other party assumed they were apologizing (indicating a preumption of guilt) they corrected the other party. 4) when the other party "practically ordered" them to leave, they stood their ground. 5)they spit on the other party's car. ................................................what exactly did the other party do? 1) they helped their asthmatic friend back into the restaurant. 2) they npresumed guilt on the part of the smoking trio and when the smoking trio corrected them, they ordered the smoking trio to leave (which they had no right to do) 3) they exhibited a self-righteous, judgmental attitude and displayed rude behaviour 4) they called the police because the smoking trio "assaulted" them by spitting on a car. .................................................... As I said before, both parties were rude and offensive.

  • I never said that I want to ban cigarette smoking, did I? If so, where? What would a ban on smoking cigarettes, thus making them illegal, do? First of all, as much as the private prison industrial complex would love it, we could not build enough prisons to hold all of the violators. It would literally choke our legal system to the point of non-functioning. You just can't put everybody in jail for doing things that may or may not be good for them. Nor should you even try. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Then the violent black market organized crime syndicate would fill the void in the supply that would make anything in Mexico or Columbia look tame. The biggest problems that we have with the current prohibition of some drugs in this country stem from them being illegal, not from health impacts (and for tobacco these are very bad). The cure would still be much worse than the disease. Adding tobacco to this prohibition would be futile and add to the insanity of the current Drug War. ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Sorry Steve_Fry, I wish that I could make you understand, but apparently I cannot. It seems to be beyond my limited literary abilities. Can someone else help Steve_Fry? Someone? Anyone?

  • I don't get it, 1713 -- you want to ban cigarette smoking but de-criminalize pot?

  • You get in between a drug addict and their drug at your own peril, because like a cornered wild animal, they will viciously attack you with no remorse. Of course, their attack is based on their own irrational fears that somehow YOU are going to prevent them from being able to get their fix on demand. That must be a terrifying feeling , judging from responses of the addicts in the above story and the many other similar accounts. What these addicts seem unable to understand is that their aggressive actions are actually fueling the efforts to make their fears a self-fulling prophesy. Dohh! .............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. There is no such rational accounting that can be made for those like Marketing_Director, whose attempt to defend the addict's vicious attacks on their victim as a some kind of Libertarian "practice of their legal right" to inflict pain on others with their harsh sidestream poisons. There is a reason why most smoking ordinances have strict limits on the minimum distances that smokers can get to the entrance of buildings that serve the public. Apparently, what it needs to be is to prevent smoking on a restaurant's property...period! ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... Kentucky is one of six states without a statewide smoke-free air policy...that obviously needs to change! The currently pending bill needs our complete support to make instances like the one in this story just a bad memory, so call your state Senator and Representative and tell them to support the Governor's proposal.

  • I have asthma. Getting in her car is not what she should have done. Asthma can escalate quickly and even with emergency inhalers, can become life threatening. I agree with Steffi Kaizun, the writer. These people were not concerned about her friend, have obvious chips on their shoulders (a person who proclaims to the world their lack of ignorance is generally pretty much aware of their true state) and, providing all the details in the narrative are true, appeared to feel that it was justifiable to verbally and (by way of the spitting) physically attack this woman, who was ill. Glad to hear they got the driver's license.

  • Well, I would assume they went back into the restaurant because she had to sit down to get through the asthma attack. Never seen an asthma attack, Marketing_Director? Not exactly something where you'll try to find your way to your car right away. If that is perceived as confrontational, wow, I don't want to cross your way. It is also common courtesy to apologize if you injure somebody, even if it happens accidentally. If somebody steps on your foot by accident, you expect an apology, too. Even if that was not that young females intention, she should have respectfully left after she received the answer "Yes; she has asthma." and perceived it as offensive. Letting things escalate seeing that somebody is in distress just shows bad character. Just my opinion. The hostess should have gotten the manager immediately, simply because a person in distress returned to the restaurant. It's common courtesy towards customers. Being rude on top of that... sorry, she needs serious training or another job. As to the smokers, yes they were within their rights but being a smoker doesn't excuse you from common courtesy and politeness. I'm thinking they were intentionally seeking out confrontation with the 'victim' just viewing her as somebody else who is causing problems for smokers forcing them to smoke outside. The spitting incident illustrates to me what type of person they are. No class! Sorry this happened to you all. Sad to say this is indeed sign of the times. But I really have to shake my head to read people think a person having an asthma attack is confrontational because they didn't leave the scene via vehicle but instead retreated to where they could get help, if needed, and at the very least a place to sit down.

  • Who said anything about it being "staff"? A person was practicing their INFRINGED legal RIGHT to smoke a LEGAL product OUTSIDE,...since your friend was already outside and had passed through the smoke,...why didn't she see here way to the vehicle and get in it? There obviously would have been no confrontation.... People who smoke are not criminals, but when you continue to attack their rights they can, and should stand up for themselves.

  • I don't know how you can take "sides" when you have only heard one side of this story. Until you hear all sides you should not judge.

  • my apologies for duplication....:o)

  • The food at Carino's is excellent and from my experience the staff is friendly too. The problem is that there are rotten apples everywhere. The people that work there are not necessarily college grads and certainly have not ever read Ms. manners book of etiquette. I’m sure there are two sides to any story. The “yes, she has Asthma” probably came out a bit more snippy and was directed at the person that was LEGALLY smoking outside, hence the reaction. There of course is no excuse for inappropriate language by restaurant staff towards customers. Restaurant staff tend to forget that WE are the customers and that without us they would not have their job. I’m sure the manager will take appropriate action and make sure that staff is not smoking out front during their breaks and direct them towards the back of the restaurant. The staff person that spit on a customer’s car should not have a job in a service oriented business.

Carino's is not Evil.

  • Hmmm, I can see both sides. The smoking trio was doing nothing wrong by smoking outside and, therefore, did not need to apologize. Your friend's presumption in assuming her concern was an apology sounded, to me, a little like he/she thought the smoker was in the wrong. If it had been me, I also probably would have clarified (nicely) that I wasn't apologizing. And your friend had no right to "practically order" the person out of the restaurant. So, up to this point, I think your party was more in the wrong than the smoking trio. Your group seemed to be the party harassing and escalating. However, the smoking trio member was wrong to spit on your car. ....................... I think everyone involved exhibited rude behaviour. I also think your attitude of "bullying", "gang mentality" and "thugs" is indicative of what is wrong with society just as much as the trio's behaviour. Everyone involved could have behaved in a more polite manner. You can't do anything about the smoking trio, but you can change your own perceptions (which affect your actions). Perhaps you should reflect on your own behaviour and attitudes.
