Open Letter to State Senator Whitney Westerfield

thomas vance Published:

Sir,

I have been told that you are holding up the medical marijuana bill, SB11.

Please state exactly why you are holding up a bill that a just completed Bluegrass poll says Kentuckians favor by a whopping 60%. A percentage that would pass a filibustered Senate!!

Also please explain what you know about the harms of marijuana use that the committees in 18 States and the District of Columbia did not find. As a person who has studied this issue closely, all the facts show marijuana as a relatively harmless drug so I am curious as to what you may have found that I missed.

Also, one has only to use common sense in deciding this issue. Has the stated harm shown up in States that have had medical marijuana laws in place for a while?

Washington State and Colorado have had Medical Marijuana for over 15 years. Where are all the bad things the Government said would happen? These States hated their medical marijuana laws so much they voted last election to make the recreational use of marijuana legal! I dont think they are crazy, do you?

Legal marijuana is estimated on the low side to be a 14 billion dollar industry. Kentucky's citizens should grab as much of this market as possible. Passing this bill out of committee is the first step, Come on!! Lets take it!

  • Ha, 1713, she got you figured out! That didn't take long.

  • Obama traditional and conservative? Oh, thanks for that good laugh. mach 570, 1713 believes his lies to be true. I'm thinking he had a very disturbing childhood. That's why he lives in the land of make believe.

  • "Stumbo has raised concerns about the crop’s economic viability and its effect on marijuana eradication efforts by law enforcement agencies." Hemp will become economically viable in the USA with or without Kentucky's participation. Marijuana will NEVER be eradicated in Kentucky, because is is constantly being replanted every year. The "problem" of marijuana eradication is one that will never be resolved, regardless of whether hemp is grown or not. Hemp hasn't been grown here since the 1940's and marijuana hasn't been eradicated yet...how much more time do they really need?

  • ;-)

  • 1713 if you think I am going to answer that question your nuttier than I thought. With the way you disrespect people on this post I feel no matter how I answer that question it will just give you more of a reason to disrespect my position.H3ll you claim to be a conservative and told me you believe in small goverment etc. As I told you before I tend to trend on the conservative ideology. When I told you this you thought that you had all the right answers and basically called me non American. This also showed me how much you think you know.

  • While my comment about your being a Republican, so next you are going to tell us that you belong to the party of Lincoln was in jest, I am curious. Do you belong to the party of Lincoln?

  • 1713 you countinue to respond to things that I either didnt say or didn't disagree with. Yes you responded to things I commeted about with lies. Again I am not forcing anything on anyone by wrighting on this post.

  • 570, funny but I have read and responded to every word...

  • 1713 by your last comments proves to me why it is hard to debate you.It shows no matter what I say you have already determined what I am going to say and you have no desire to read what I write. Have a good day.

  • Next thing that 570 is going to try to tell us is that, as a Republican, he belongs to the party of Lincoln!

  • Yeah, you lost the election all right, but there were plenty of attempts by Republican governors and legislators to rig the system. Read about it here, Republicans and voting rights: http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-gop-war-on-voting-20110830 ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ Your comments regarding abortion and gay marriage indicate that you are trying to force others to adhere to your opinions with the law. Look, I don't have time to completely educate you on all of these issues, but be assured that you live in an information bubble that keeps you ignorant about this stuff. Science tells us that life begins and birth, and the law agrees. Your religious beliefs contradict these facts, and YOU want to make everyone have to abide by these religious beliefs under the penalty of law! My opinion of when life begins is irrelevant, so is yours, as there are scientific facts and established law that govern these matters. I am not distorting anything that you say...and if you think I am, name something where I did that and tell us what the distortion was? There is no middle ground with these Teabaggers.

  • 1713 where in my commets did I say that I am forcing any of my opinons on anyone. After reading your post it seems to me just a radical left wing rant to make republicans look mean and not even addressing anything I said.Explain to me where the republican party is trying to take away anyones voting rights as far as I know this is why we lost the election. Most people that could vote stayed home because the liberal media convinced them that Obama was a lock.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>What civil rights are we taking away?????,and most importantly human rights???.>>>>>>>>>>> Let me ask you something when does life begin in your opinion.Let this non educated give you a lesson. The patial birth abortions are performed when the baby is completly formed with a brain, a heart, feet, legs, lungs. The doctor reaches in and stabs the baby. Oh I am sorry that is between the doctor and the woman to decide to kill this baby and the baby has no say so. Again when does that baby have a right to life?????????.I thought you were for less goverment. Don't we alredy have enough laws on violence against any one.>>>>>>>>>>>>I dont know why you feel the need in calling me names and destorting everything I post.Maybe your like our goverment is today and would rather talk bad about another person's opinion than to try to find the middle ground. You need to re-read Goldwater's comment again and try to live by it and maybe you will calm down and act like an American.PS I side with the ideas I agree with not with a party.

  • 570, what kind of party (or religion) is in favor of protecting those who conduct violence against women, I mean, besides the Taliban? That would be your Republican Party. Victory: The Violence Against Women Act finally passed Congress. But no thanks to the 138 Republicans who voted against it. That is the majority of Republicans in Congress voted against this act. That is who you are siding with, and that ain't conservative.

  • I am not trying to make you "sound like a radical", your own words are doing that just fine. You have your right to your opinion, you just don't have the right to force it on everybody else by law. There is a process that includes elections that you have to go about in order to try to do that, and your side lost big, rejected by the majority. We could have gone your way, but we chose not to. Elections have consequences. ......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... You are also a Republican. Ya know, there is something drastically wrong in America when the same party that tries to take away voting rights, civil rights, human rights, Constitutional rights and religious rights encourages people to take up arms in the fear that the "government" is taking away our rights. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "Equality, rightly understood as our founding fathers understood it, leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences; wrongly understood, as it has been so tragically in our time, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism." Barry Goldwater .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... "You don't need to be straight to fight and die for your country. You just need to shoot straight." Barry Goldwater ....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... What you stand for is very radical and dangerous, not conservative. Forcing your religious ideology on other people is not conservative, and puts you in the same class as religious fanatics like the Taliban. It is also hypocritical. Let me ask you a question: Have you ever used birth control pills to prevent pregnancy? How do you think that chemical birth control works? Hint: they prevent the fertilized egg from attaching to the wall of the uterus. You should have gone to college too. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... All of your arguments against allowing gays to have equal rights were used against black people in this country. They were as wrong and unconstitutional then as they are now. Liberals fought and died to give minorities AND women the right to vote...actually, they had the right all along in this country, guaranteed by the Constitution, it is just that it had to be pried from the cold dead fingers of rednecks. That is what our government is for...oh, and why do you hate America?

  • First and formost1713 I love my Country and its morals and traditions more than some. Thats all I am going to say about that because I can see through your attempt to make me sound like a radical. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>You have also thrown a wrench into the conversation with your definition of conservatism and your examples.Again you are trying to generalize opinions that aren't yours as radical. I agree with you definition that a conservative believes in small goverment. I dont agree with your opinion that a woman is in charge of her own body when she is pregnant. As you should know most abortions are performed just because the mother does not want the baby. In my opinion that is murder.Yes I hate it that the goverment needs to make a decesions for that mother when in reality ther is no decision to be made. The baby that is in the womb has as many God given rights as the mother does. So unfortunatly the only avenue we have is to make laws against killing that baby (eventhough the goverment has failed at this).>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sorry to burst your bubble but my belief as to when life begins is based on my definition of life.If you think this is pushing my religious beliefs on someone then were am I supposed to tell somne to not murder someone, is that not in the bible????I will say at this point I do try to live as God has demanded and I know that I fall short of this. I don't ever try to push my religion on anyone.I do give my opinion to others when it is either in a conversation or I feel it would support my moral judgment. I believe that life begins when the baby has a heart beat.Again most of the abortions are performed after this.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> For you to say this is a RADICAL view is inappropriate and shows you lack of trying to respect and understand anothers opinion.I would respect you better if you would just say you dont believe in my ideas.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>As far as Gay marriage, I will say that marriage is a religious thing.Having said that I do believe that gay people should be treated fairly and that there union should be respected. I have always said if it makes you happy and it dosnt hurt another person go for it. It is ashamed that gay people cannot have all the rights of a married couple. This is where we need to go back to civil unions and ensure they are respected enough to have the cvil rights granted by the constitution. If a man has loved another man for years and he is in a car wreck. His partner should be the one who is there for him. I was going to say allowed but that seems so goverment.

  • The real President Obama is a very traditional, pragmatic and conservative President. The President Obama that you think that you know does not exist anywhere other than in that empty chair that Clint Eastwood was screaming at at the Republican Convention, or on FOX News. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ One can be a fiscal conservative and a social moderate...not everyone who is a conservative is a full-on, bat crap crazy intolerant right winger. What you call a conservative is really a RADICAL! True conservatives believe in small government that is not on the backs of the people in their most private affairs. That is the stuff of a theocracy or dictatorship...you know, like the Taliban and Sharia Law. Why do you hate America? ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... It is NOT a conservative position to have REALLY BIG government making medical decisions FOR women about their own bodies, and getting in between them and their doctors. It is also NOT a conservative position to impose one's own religious beliefs (like life begins at conception, which is NOT a scientific finding, but a christian religious concept) on others by the force of law. Nothing conservative about it. ...................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... It is NOT a conservative concept to have REALLY BIG government impose by law its basic christian religious tenets on the people concerning who they can love and want to raise a family with, regardless of their sex, race, or national origin. To deny these people their basic Constitutionally guaranteed rights based on their sexual orientation is an abomination and is unconstitutional. Shucks, for that matter, the whole same sex marriage ban thingy really isn't even a Christian tenet, as Christ never even mentions homosexuality...not even once! If it were supposed to be so important to Christians, then why didn't JESUS mention it even once? Other than the one reference by Paul some 60 years AD, the only references to homosexuality were in the Old Testament where there are also references allowing selling your daughters into slavery, prostitution, or stoning them to death for looking at a man who was not their husbands...real Sharia Law crap! This is not what America is supposed to be about, but it is radicals like you who are trying to make us into that. Heaven forbid! ..................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... The fact is that the crap that is selling itself as conservatism these days is anything but, and would not even be recognized by Senator Barry Goldwater, who is known as the father of modern conservatism. It is the radical intolerant right wing agenda that unabashedly supports the ultra rich's agenda above all else that is being rejected by the vast majority of Americans. Since FOX News came into being, Republicans have lost 4 out of 5 national elections...the proof is in the puddin'. Keep it up and you will never win another national election.

  • 1713 so now I am confused. Most of your post on this site seem to go away from the traditional conservative views. Mainly your support for Obama.I could be wrong but there are two things that a traditinal conservative believes in and one is the rightes of the unborn and same sex marriage and you seem to be against these???

  • 570, "PS I too am in favor of medical marijuana and I consider myself a traditional conservative.God,Family and Country." Congratulations on your open stand for medical marijuana, but unfortunately, you are in the minority of "traditional conservatives" who are in favor of it. I believe in the science behind medical marijuana, and that it should be decriminalized to allow and encourage the open scientific research necessary for it to reach its potential in the world of pharmacology. I believe in and have a strong family unit and I am certainly more patriotic than most.

  • 1713, where in the statement you wrote does it say he is against medical marijuana? Also if you say his statement is the statement of a traditional Republican then I guess a traditional Democrat would be against all he said? I have asked you many times exactly what you believe in and you never reply. Why?? PS I too am in favor of medical marijuana and I consider myself a traditional conservative.God,Family and Country.

  • Stop trying to confuse Senator Westerfield with the facts...they mean nothing to him. The Guy is a traditional Republican, as his web site admits: "Welcome! I aim to serve God through my term in the State Senate, and I’m humbled by the opportunity. Serving as your Senator allows me the opportunity to protect the unborn, to stand up against the casino industry, to defend traditional marriage, to repair Kentucky’s broken financial house, bring new jobs to the 3rd District, and demonstrate good stewardship of all God has blessed us with in Kentucky!" ........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... What do you expect?

  • My take is: Westerfield will continue to fight against SB11 with one hand while holding an alcoholic drink in the other.
