Open letter to Governor Beshear

Please veto Senate Bill 2 – the Pension Destruction Bill.

Senate Bill 2 breaks the back of the inviolable contract and removes its protections from new hires. These "new hires" the legislators dismissed so easily are our young people, the next generation. Shame on the legislators and shame on you if you sign SB 2.

On the House floor Rep. Stumbo recognized that this is a bad bill for future hires. He brushed that aside with a statement that those who begin after Jan. 1, 2014, will be informed. They have a choice to take a job with the state or not. That’s their choice, he said.

The question is, who will choose a career in public service when the reward of a good pension is taken away?

Stumbo and others went on to opine that current employees would not be hurt by SB 2. The bill also deliberately packs the Kentucky Retirement Systems Board of Trustees with “employers” and dilutes the influence of the trustees elected by retirees. It also creates a pension oversight board. This is all spade work in preparation for further erosion of benefits for current employees and retirees. Anyone who thinks otherwise is foolish.

Sen. Thayer kept trying to channel President Lincoln on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, March 26. “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here.” He should have been quoting President Franklin Roosevelt -- this is "a date which will live in infamy."

Gov. Beshear, I volunteered to work for your first gubernatorial campaign. I was so pleased when you ran again and won. Don’t make me sorry.

  • ihate's comment, "In last 154 years , 125 of those years KY has had a Democrat for Governor including 38 of the last 42 years and somehow its still those right wing Republicans fault and bad ideas......that has ruined the KY economy (sic)", is a classic example of why knowing history is important. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. ihate obviously does not know the history of his own party, even current events. The Republican and Democratic parties did a political polarity shift years ago, as the Democrats used to be the conservative party (i.e., think greedy, facist, racist, sexist, slavery, Jim Crow, repression of women's rights, child labor, burning rivers, dirty air, dirty water, corporations are people, rich get richer, poor get poorer, military industrial complex, NRA, ect.) and the Republicans used to be the liberals (i.e., abolition, transcontinental railroad, interstate highways, Panama Canal, 15.Fight against Nazis, Fascism and Totalitarianism, the GI Bill, The Marshall Plan, Environmental Laws, Freedom of Information Act, Workplace safety laws, Securities Act of 1933 & Most banking Regulations, The Development and Deployment for the Internet (DARPA/HPCA), The Tennessee Valley project, 40 hour work week, benefits, equal rights for all, development of the middle class, social security, medicare, head start, Obamacare, etc.). ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................. For much of America’s history, political parties consisted of liberal and conservative elected officials and voters. In the 1970s, however, this ideological heterogeneity began a marked shift where liberals sorted into the Democratic party and conservatives sorted into the Republican party. Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt and even Richard Nixon were hardly conservatives by the modern definition. Shucks, Ronald Reagan isn't a conservative by today's Teabbagger standards! But that is the end of this basic civics lesson for someone who has little regard for the facts. There must not be much oxygen in that Fox News bubble, or in you high school civics class.

  • Need4speed, can you please source the substance of your comment, "defined contribution with a guaranteed 4% return? 401(K)?" I can't find such terms anywhere? I must not be searching for the right thing if that is true. Thanks.

  • Defined contribution with a guaranteed 4% return? 401(K)? I don't see anything wrong with this at all. My defined contribution has no guaranteed rate of return and still has done pretty well. My 401(k) has done very well also in spite of the downturn. Quitcher... I'll say it. If you don't like the package, move on to the next job.

  • With some things they are DINO's...but Governor Beshear and the Demos in the House are the only thing that is stopping the Senate from furthering a right wing agenda similar to the other red states, which would be disastrous. As for the Sheriff, I believe that he only belongs to the Democratic Party to be able to get elected in this heavily Democratic County. I'd say he votes Republican and belongs to the Drug War Party anyway.

  • Mmmh, 1713, you didn't pay attention to who did what during that pension discussion. And here you were in the other discussion hurling about what the Democrats were doing. You even quoted them. Maybe you want to claim they are Democrats in name only? Like with Melton?

  • This is a typical Republican tactic of destroying the state retirement systems, and to use the "Animal Farm" type maxim, "to save them". It is a trick and a scam to dismantle our nations safety nets, which includes are government's retirement systems. They say the same thing about saving Social Security and Medicare too, don't they, and they no less disingenuously.
