My name is Deanna Moore and I am a 1993 graduate of Kentucky State University. I am writing about the recent firing of the Student Life Director and Staff Regent, Leslie Thomas. Leslie has been with the University for over 25 years and has seen many generations come and go. I have been so proud of my University that I encouraged my son to attend. The first person that I wanted him to meet was Leslie Thomas because I knew that she would keep an eye on him and help make his transition from high school to college seamless. I also knew that she would bring out things in him that neither he nor I knew existed. Now in his sophomore year, he has become a great leader at the university and highly regarded by staff and his peers. Leslie Thomas is more than just the Director of Student Life; she is a mentor, teacher, mother, confidant, problem solver and most importantly a FRIEND. I remember coming to homecoming in 1998. While on the way to pick up my son, who at the time was 4, from his aunt my sorority sister and I were hit by a drunk driver. The party on campus was in Bell gym and was just over and everyone saw the accident at the bottom of the hill on Main Street. One of first people on the scene was Leslie and she also went to the hospital with us to make sure that everything was ok. I was no longer a student at KSU, but she was right there like I still was. I am sure that just about every student that passed thru Kentucky States doors has some story about how she had such a positive effect on their lives. I am finding it hard to believe that there is any explanation that could be given for letting her go. I guess this is why the “at-will” dismissal was used by a bunch of cowards. Leslie Thomas is KSU and if they truly took the time to get to know her instead of trying to make her life miserable, they would see her love and dedication to the students and the university. Isn’t this the type of person that any sane president and administration would want working for their university, if they cared? I need some answers, she deserves some answers. My guess is they want a fight and didn’t do their research to see how the outcome of this would be. This woman is loved by many and we refuse to sit idly by and allow her to just be dismissed and especially with no justifiable reason.
