If you happen to find yourself in a political argument or discussion don't waste your time trying to convince other people to believe what you believe. You won't be able to just completely change someone's mind in a five minute debate. I've found that the goal of a social debate isn't to try and convince the other person that you're right and they're wrong, rather the aim should be to encourage thought. Encourage them to investigate for themselves, because your goal isn't to "win", your goal is to get them to look at the subject matter through the opposition's eyes. Their views may change or may be reinforced, either way you can evade the irrationality of emotion and replaced it with the most important tool in politics...thought.
